Starting in the summer semester 2025, all students and enrolled doctoral candidates at the University of Freiburg are required to use a university email address for study-related matters. With the entry into force of the mandatory use of university email addresses pursuant to § 11 of the Admissions and Enrollment Regulations (ZIMMO) on April 1, 2025, this requirement has also applied to FACE students since the summer semester 2025. This measure is part of the update of identity management, the improvement of IT security, and data protection. Since mandatory use is associated with a significant increase in the number of email addresses, a strategic cooperation has been established with the GWDG (Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH in Göttingen), which provides email services for scientific institutions within the DFN Association’s research network.

The UniMailbox follows the pattern: UniAccount@email.uni-freiburg.de, for example ab1234@email.uni-freiburg.de. In addition, an alias in the form firstname.lastname@email.uni-freiburg.de is created. The use of private email addresses for study-related purposes is no longer permitted. Important notifications from central systems such as HISinOne or the learning platform ILIAS are sent exclusively to the UniMailbox. Please also use the UniMailbox for inquiries to the Dean of Studies Office, the Examination Office, or teaching staff.

Notice: Old student email addresses ending in @students.uni-freiburg.de and @planeten.uni-freiburg.de that are currently still set up as forwarding addresses only will be permanently deactivated on June 30, 2026. From this date onwards, emails sent to these addresses will no longer be forwarded. Please use only your current university mailbox address with the domain: @email.uni-freiburg.de.

*Exception Doctoral candidates who are employed or were registered before 2018 and who already use their institute's email domain are not affected by this change and can continue using their existing email addresses.
